Yvonne Joyce Craig
Yvonne Joyce Craig, May 16 1937 - August 17, 2015. She was an American dancer and actress who was famous for her portrayals as Batgirl on the 1960s TV show Batman and Marta who played the Orion slave girl Marta who appeared in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Deceive" (1969). The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer of female superheroes" for television. Yvonne Craig was born and was raised in Taylorville, Illinois. In 1951, her family relocated to the Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas, Texas, where she went to W. H. Adamson High School and later Sunset High School, from which she was not able to finish her education due to the absence of "a single PE credit". Craig was accepted into Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the role of youngest corps de ballerina after being recognized by Alexandra Danilova who is a instructor and dancer. This was a great training for her when she was performing stunts playing Batgirl. In 1957, she resigned from the ballet company due to an issue regarding casting changes. After that, she relocated to Los Angeles with the hope to continue her career in dance. But, she found herself appearing in film roles. One of her earliest television appearances was in an episode from the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover" 1958) together with Neil Hamilton, who played her stepfather (later Hamilton played Police Commissioner James Gordon, Batgirl's father). In the years following her appearances on The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story (all 1959), and Gidget (all 1958) she also appeared as Beverly Mills on the TV show Mr. Lucky (also 1959). Craig played alongside Bing Crosby (1960), and Seven Women from Hell (1961) in which she was portrayed by Cesar Romero. In 1962, she was a guest star in the television show Western Laramie in the episode "The Long Road Back".Craig was in roles alongside Elvis Presley in two films The other was It Happened at the World's Fair (1963) and Kissin' Cousins (1964). She also played an Russian dancer alongside James Coburn in Mars Needs Women (1966).
