Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was an overnight nurse in order to give her the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. While she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
